About the conference

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a conference for girls in grades 5-10. This day-long event will include hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). At the conference, you will get a chance to meet women role models and learn more about how they chose a career in one of the many different STEM fields. You'll get to visit the United States Naval Postgraduate School and explore exciting careers such as aerospace engineering, systems engineering, medicine, physical science, naval intelligence, cyber security and other possible occupations for civilian and military women in the Navy.

When you register to attend the EYH conference, you can choose up to three  workshop sessions that sound interesting to you. You'll be assigned to attend two sessions and we'll try to give you your top choices.

Read the workshop descriptions. Choose the workshops that most interest you. Feel free to select the same workshops as your friends or decide with your friends that you will attend different workshops; then tell each other about your unique experiences after the conference!

Be prepared to be active!!! You'll do some listening, but mostly you'll be engaged in some really fun hands-on activities including robotics, forensics, animal husbandry, marine biology, boat-building, underwater exploration, aeronautics, computer science and energy.

You can view a presentation about our conference at http://www.expandingyourhorizons.org/PPS/NPSMonterey/

Here's the schedule for the day...
8:30 am Registration with Science and Engineering Magic
9:15 am Opening Session - Dr. Alana Sherman
10:15 am Workshop 1
11:45 am Lunch and Career Fair
1:15 pm Workshop 2
2:40 pm Closing Session

Thanks to our sponsors the cost to attend the conference is FREE!!  (Refunds will be made to anyone who already paid.)

The online registration for workshops is on a first come basis, so sign up early!
Most workshops are limited to 20 girls.

IMPORTANT: ALL STUDENT RELEASE FORMS (SRF) MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN 5PM OCT.31 - THE COMPLETED FORM IS REQUIRED FOR ENTRANCE TO THE NPS CAMPUS. THE SRF CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE 'REGISTRATION' PAGE. IT CAN BE FAXED TO:831-656-3238 OR SCANNED AND EMAILED TO DANICKLE@NPS.EDU

TEACHERS!!
There is a training workshop for up to 15 teachers who want to learn how to build and operate a cool underwater robotic vehicle called a SeaPerch. (They'll each get a SeaPerch kit for their/your classroom too - so make sure you tell them about this great opportunity!!)

For additional information or with questions please contact conference coordinator Dr. David Nickles (danickle@nps.edu)

NOTE: For admittance to NPS, all persons must be on a gate access list. Because NPS is a secure Navy facility as well as a University, every adult driving through the gate must be ready to present a valid photo ID and vehicle registration/auto insurance as required by the State of California. HOWEVER, our EYH volunteers will be on hand starting at 8:00 am to facilitate this access process in the simplest way possible. Find out more about the National Expanding Your Horizons Organization by going to the National EYH Website and watch a video of girls enjoying an EYH event.
